The smart specialisation paradigm is based on the principle that innovation and competitiveness promotion strategies should be based on the characteristics and assets of the respective regions. Therefore, it is up to the regions and their institutions and governance models to define an R&D and Innovation strategy that concentrates their resources on a limited number of priorities, on which it is possible to achieve an overall competitive critical mass.
To formulate the Norte Region Smart Specialisation Strategy, eight priority areas were identified for S3NORTE:
- Culture, Creativity and Fashion
- Mobility Industries and Environment
- Advanced Manufacturing Systems
- Food and Environmental Systems
- Health and Life Sciences
- Symbolic Capital, Technology and Tourism Services
- Marine technologies and economy
- Human Capital and Specialised Services
